Last minute (and school appropriate) Halloween Costumes

If you're in a pinch for a last-minute Halloween costume, don't worry! Uncertain about what is appropriate for a "school" costume? Our children's school has specific guidelines for Halloween costumes to ensure safety and focus on academics. However, I understand it may seem limiting. So what defines a school-appropriate costume?

Here’s a quick summary of the rules:

  1. No masks.

Children can’t always see well through masks, making it difficult to work. But this rule is in place also because they quickly become a distraction during the school day. Also depending on kids ages, masks can actually be terrifying. I will admit even as a 30 something old, there are definitely some Halloween masks I do not want to meet unexpectedly.

  1. No Face Paint

To be fair, this is really my rule.

If the kid can do it themselves, then have at it. But trying to apply face paint when we’re rushing to get to school on time sounds like an almost guaranteed way for chaos early in the morning and there is not enough coffee in the world to deal with that willingly. Add the very likely risk of the design not being to their standards or when it gets smudged. No thank you.

  1. No swords or weapons, or anything that can be used as a weapon

Seeing how my 6-year-old son handles his toys, this rule doesn’t surprise me at all. Not only do teachers want to avoid the inevitable sword fighting in the classroom, but fake swords or weapon like toys are a huge distraction. (For us, this includes items like umbrellas)

  1. Easy to Move in

So many adorable costumes just aren’t practical for all the different activities during a school day, like sitting during class or running around on the playground.

We've compiled a list of creative ideas that can be easily put together using items you likely already have at home.

  1. Ghost (Okay maybe this one may not be so school apprpriate)

    - Simply cut eye holes in an old white sheet for a classic ghost look.

    - Enhance the costume with chains or torn fabric for a spooky effect.

  2. Cat

    - Dress in all black and draw whiskers on your face with eyeliner.

    - Create ears using black paper or a headband.

  3. Tourist

    - Sport a vibrant Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and a camera around your neck.

    - Complete the ensemble with sunglasses and a sun hat. A moon bag, binoculars or camera can all add to the outfit. Print a quick map for the traveler to use on their Halloween journey.

  4. Nerd

    - Don high-waisted pants, suspenders, and glasses.

    - Carry books or a pocket protector for an extra nerdy touch.

  5. Farmer

    - Put on overalls, a plaid shirt, and a straw hat.

    - Carry a pitchfork or a basket of faux vegetables.

  6. Identity Thief

    - Cover your clothes with "Hello, my name is" stickers.

    - Write different names on each sticker for a humorous twist.

  7. Scuba Diver

-Dumpster dive and dig out some empty soda bottles.

-Paint any color (check the shed for old house paint). Add a pair of goggles and black clothes and your little scuba diver is set to go.
